Transplanting Seedlings

This was part of how I spent part of my day on Thursday after watching the Eagles Parade. Go Eagles! The bad part of seed starting and transplanting is all the potting mixed wasted. Used the next best thing and used plastic cups. Didn't feel like disinfecting pots.

Had to do something because some had started to die and many didn't germinate and were failures. I won't say that the seeds weren't viable because some of the seeds were old. I guess doing a germination test on paper towel or coffee filters is actually not a bad idea for old seed. Many seeds just didn't thrive like geraniums, petunias, and impatiens which aren't hard to start. The lupins got their true leaves and had them close to the light and forgot to water them. I'm sad to loose them. May start start more of them. How could I not label a seed but I didn't and didn't know that these were gazania seedlings. Odd looking aren't they? I'll be surprised to see them survive.

Can you believe I have foxgloves! And I have more than one. Very excited.

Snapdragons and more foxgloves still in their community pot. Going to try to remove some soon before they start to have problems with over crowding. The ones to the left look like foxgloves and look less delicate now. The labels fell off so I'm guessing which is which.

Foxgloves, small and some larger and  small vincas.

Yes they should have been transplanted by now. Maybe tomorrow.

I see 2 chocolate mint coleus. My favorite.

That's a mess but they'll survive.

Poor impatiens. They took a long time to germinate and only a few did. Not sowing any more although I will sow more vinca.

My geraniums (pelargoniums) did awful. Thirty seeds sown. Twenty from a pack from 2017 so they weren't real old and one 10 pack ordered for 2018. Went to Primex Garden Center today in search of more seeds. Lots of seeds but no geraniums. Another customer was also looking for them and we had a nice conversation in the store among the seeds. He wanted the ivy leaf seed which sales out fast. I ordered some today from Burpee. The ones I wanted were already sold out at Parks Seeds, and Swallowtail Garden Seed. Harris seeds had a nice variety.

One purple cone flower seedling. These were planted over a week ago.

Vinca, echinacea, and gazania.

The vinca are nice and healthy.

Echinacea had started to die and I had to save a few. I'll start more but they have to have a period of cold in the refrigerator.

Foxgloves before transplanting.

Vinca before transplanting.

Air plants soaking. Next month it'll be one year since I bought them from the flower show. It's only 3 weeks until the show. Ordered my tickets last night.

Sad excuse for violas. They got white spots on them and I threw them away.

Impatiens

Last of the blooms upstairs. Three more to bring up from the basement and no more hyacinths in the house until next winter.

Amaryllis brought from work so I don't miss the bloom.

Two packs of seeds from Primex today. I behaved in the store and greenhouse. Wanted an oxalis triangularis. Not for 17.00's a small pot. They'll be in the supermarket by Saint Patrick's Day for a couple of dollars.

Now why did I buy these? Seeds don't do well for me direct sown. Gives me some more ideas for plants that do well in dappled shade. Never knew dianthus did well in shade. The package also contains forget me not, balsam Tom thumb mix, annual candytuft, English Wallflower, annual baby's breath, rainbow mix coleus, alpine forget me not, Johnny jump up, sweet William, and bellflower. Waiting patiently to start tomatoes, peppers, chard, and lettuce. Haven't winter sown anything yet. I'd better do it soon or it'll be too late. I only have 2 milk jugs.

Yes I bought fresh flowers for the table.
