First Day December

Todays plan was to start planting bulbs in the yard but I went to the nursery first to get plastic to protect the bulbs from squirrels. I usually use chicken wire but the bulbs usually emerge and get stuck in the wire and I loose many blooms. So this season I'm trying poultry fence. And hope the squirrels don't eat through it. They're are smart. Rain and shorter days has ended my plans for today. Tomorrow morning the rain continues but when it stops or if it's only a drizzle I'll get started planting before it too late to put them in the ground.  It will eventually freeze. Some will go in containers and sit on the porch till spring so there's still time for those. The smell of pine scented the air today at the nursery and produce market from Christmas trees, garland, and all the trimmings. Maybe I can start decorating and hang a wreath on my door on Monday. Did I buy seeds? Didn't plan too but if I get some now I won't have to pay shipping charges. The plan is to try them on the sun porch in containers. I tried to get bush varieties and see if alpine strawberries will grow for me.

They were discounted 50% and everything else in the store was 20 percent off. There were many vendors today outdoors at the nursery farmer's market. I expected fruit and vegetables but there were only local crafter.
The mammoth amaryllis opened the day after Thanksgiving. Too early. Hoped it wouldn't open until Christmas.

Paper whites in the house also have started to bloom. I have to get the others started.

And have to get these and others plant between tomorrow and Monday. It's supposed to be over 60 degrees tomorrow and the high 50's on Monday so it'll be nice days for planting.
